| biography:
| Art historian, born in Berlin, Germany. He studied Sanskrit at the University of Berlin (1898 PhD), then studied art history and lived in Italy for several years. Beginning in 1914 he taught at the University of Freiburg, was dismissed by the Nazis (1933), and emigrated to New York City (1935). He taught at New York University (from 1935) and specialized in subjects ranging from the Mannerist style of the Renaissance to 19th-c art. |
