| US politician and vice-president (1977–81), born in Ceylon, Minnesota, USA. He studied at the University of Minnesota Law School, and made his reputation as a local Democrat in his home state, before serving in the US Senate (1964–76). He was selected as Jimmy Carter's running-mate in the 1976 presidential election, and served as an active vice-president, but was defeated with Carter in their bid for re-election in 1980. In 1984 he was the Democratic presidential nominee, but was crushingly defeated by the Republican, Ronald Reagan. Following this reverse, Mondale retired from national politics to resume his law practice, then was appointed US ambassador to Japan (1993–97) by President Clinton. He was narrowly defeated for a seat in the Senate in the mid-term elections in 2002. |
