| US senator, born in Preston, Georgia, USA. A lawyer and judge, he went on to the US Senate (Democrat, Georgia, 1922–57). Although opposed to many of President Franklin Roosevelt's domestic policies, he supported US participation in World War 2, the United Nations, and NATO. As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1954–7), he maintained his internationalist stance. |
