| Novelist and critic, born in Birmingham, West Midlands, C England, UK. He studied at Birmingham University, then held several university posts in Britain and the USA. He became part of a Birmingham School of Writers which included Louis MacNeice. His first novel, Innocence is Drowned, was published in 1938, and he scored a considerable success with Dead Man Over All, in 1950. He wrote several critical works, including The English Novel: A Short Critical History (1954). |
