| Painter and illustrator, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He came under the influence of the pre-Raphaelites, and became a leader with William Morris in the Arts and Crafts movement, and in early Socialism. He was particularly celebrated as an illustrator of children's books. He was director of Manchester School of Art (1893–6), Reading College (1896–8), and principal of the Royal College of Art (1898–9). |
