| Economist and journalist, born in Langport, Somerset, SW England, UK. He graduated in mathematics at University College London, was called to the bar in 1852, and succeeded his father-in-law, James Wilson (1805–60), as editor of the Economist in 1860. His English Constitution (1867) is still a standard work. His Physics and Politics (1872) applied the theory of evolution to politics. He advocated many constitutional reforms, including the introduction of life peers. |
