| biography:
| Writer, born in Long Branch, New Jersey, USA. He studied at Yale and was founding editor of the small short-lived, pacifist magazine Seven Arts (1916–17). After the 1930s he became a left-wing activist whose large literary output included politically inspired fiction and Marxist social analysis. He wrote and lectured widely on Latin America, his works including Virgin Spain (1926, revised 1942) and America Hispana (1931). He lived in Truro, MA and New York City. |
