| Geologist, born in Kalmar, Sweden. He emigrated in 1883 to study mining in W USA. He performed field work with the US Geological Survey (1884–1915), while concurrently teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1908–33), and made major contributions to knowledge of the genesis of ore deposits. |
