| biography:
| Polish Communist leader, born in Krosno, SE Poland. A professional trade unionist, in 1943 he became secretary of the outlawed Communist Party. He was vice-president of the first post-war Polish government (1945–8), but his criticism of the Soviet Union led to his arrest and imprisonment (1951–4). He returned to power as party first secretary in 1956. In 1971, following a political crisis, he resigned office, and spent his remaining years largely in retirement. |
