| Hero of the Confederacy, born in Columbia, South Carolina, USA. He studied law, but devoted himself to managing his extensive family estates. In the Civil War (1861–5) he raised ‘Hampton's Legion’. As brigadier-general he commanded a cavalry force (1862–3), was wounded at Gettysburg, received the command of Lee's cavalry in 1864, and in 1865 served in South Carolina against Sherman. He became state governor in 1876, when he was instrumental in restoring white rule to South Carolina, and later became a senator (1878–91). |
