| Film director and writer, born in Penza, W Russia. He joined the State Institute for Cinematography in Moscow, and in his first feature, Mat (1926, Mother), applied his concepts of montage and cross-cutting in editing. There followed the silent classics, Konets Sankt-Peterburga (1927, The End of St Petersburg) and Potomok Chingis-Khan (1928, trans Storm Over Asia), and sound films such as Dezertir (1933, Deserter). Much of his work portrays heroic characters in the context of historical turmoil. His books and lectures also had great international influence. |
