| biography:
| Duke of Savoy, born in Turin, Piedmont, NW Italy. The son of Carlo Emanuele I, he married Marie Cristine, sister of Louis XIII of France. He signed the Peace of Cherasco (1631) with France, which gave him a large part of Monferrato but gave Mantova to the Gonzaga-Nevers, and also the Treaty of Rivoli (1635), with the view of taking Lombardy from Spain. After some initial victories, he died of malaria. |
