| biography:
| Indian statesman and prime minister (1989–90), born in Allahabad, NE India. He studied at Puna (Poona) and Allahabad universities, and was elected to the Federal Parliament as a Congress Party representative in 1971. He served under Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi as minister of commerce (1976–7), finance (1984–6), and defence (1986–7), but on exposing the Bofors arms scandal, he was sacked from the government and Congress. He made a comeback as head of the Vanseta Dal coalition, and became prime minister. Plagued by political crises, he was defeated on a vote of confidence the following year. |
