| Poet, blind from childhood, born in Lisbon, Portugal. His volumes, Cartas de Echo e Narciso (1821, Letters from Echo and Narcissus) and Amor e melancholia (1828, Love and Melancholy), inaugurated the Portuguese Romantic movement. He also translated Virgil, Ovid, Shakespeare, and Goethe. |
