| Operatic composer, born in Catania, S Italy. An organist's son, he was sent by a Sicilian nobleman to the Conservatorio of Naples. Il Pirata (1827) carried the composer's name beyond Italy, but he is now best known for La Sonnambula (1831) and Norma (1832). He influenced several later operatic composers, including Wagner. |
