| Inventor, born in Moline, Illinois, USA. At 16 he ran away to New York City, and studied engineering at night school. He founded the Bendix Co of Chicago (1907), mass-producing automobiles, and pioneering the starter drive (1913). The Bendix Corporation was formed in 1924, which eventually produced a wide range of technical equipment. His interest in aviation prompted the Bendix Transcontinental Air Race (1931), and he later formed Bendix Helicopters. |
