| Physicist and meteorologist, born in Kristiania (now Oslo, Norway). He was professor at Stockholm (1895–1907), Kristiania (1907–12), Leipzig (1912–17), and Oslo (1926–51). A pioneer of weather-forecasting, he studied the large-scale dynamics of air masses, and with his son Jacob and others developed the theory of fronts. |
