| Playwright, born in Paris, France. His first efforts were failures, but after his marriage he met the actress Virginie Déjazet (1798–1875), for whom he wrote several plays, and his work became widely known in Europe and the USA. His plays include Les Pattes de monde (1860, trans A Scrap of Paper), La Tosca (1887), on which Puccini's opera is based, and over 60 others, many written for Sarah Bernhardt. |
