| biography:
| British statesman and prime minister (1834, 1835–41), born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge and Glasgow, became a Whig MP in 1805, and was made chief secretary for Ireland (1827–8). Succeeding as second viscount (1828), he became home secretary (1830–4) under Grey. He formed a close, almost avuncular relationship with the young Queen Victoria. Defeated in the election of 1841, he resigned and thereafter took little part in public affairs. His wife wrote novels as Lady Caroline Lamb (1785–1828), and was notorious for her 9-months' devotion (1812–13) to Lord Byron. |
