| biography:
| Film actor and director, born in Silbodal, Sweden. Trained as an actor, he joined the film company Svenska Bio in 1912. His successes as actor/director included Ingeborg Holm (1913), Terje Vigen (1918), and Körkarlen (1920, The Phantom Carriage), where his psychological portrayal of David Holm and use of double exposure were landmarks in cinematic acting. His ability to adapt classic Swedish writers to the screen gave Swedish cinema popular appeal. He later went to Hollywood (1923–30), where his best-known films were The Scarlet Letter (1926) and The Wind (1928). He did not adapt well to sound cinema, and directed only two films after returning home. As an actor, however, he created several memorable parts, notably in Wild Strawberries (1957). |
