| biography:
| Bolivian politician, revolutionary, and president (1952–6, 1960–4, 1985–9), born in Tarija, S Bolivia. He studied at the University Mayor de San Andres, and held a number of financial posts before entering politics in the 1930s, and in 1942 founding the National Revolutionary Movement. He went into exile in 1946, returning to win the presidency in 1952. He was re-elected in 1960 and again in 1985, returning from near-retirement at the age of 77. During a long career he was Bolivian ambassador in London (1956–9) and a professor at London University (1966). |
