| biography:
| Dutch politician, prime minister (1963–5), and lawyer, born in Arnhem, E Netherlands. In 1957–9 he was general secretary of the Catholic Employers Federation (Algemene Katholieke Werkgeversvereniging), then became minister of agriculture and fisheries (1959–63), prime minister, and represented the KVP (Katholieke Volkspartij) in parliament (1965–6). In 1965 he was appointed a member of the Rhine estuary council (Raad van het Openbaar Lichaam Rijnmond) and in 1968 he became Burgomaster of The Hague. He held both offices until he died in 1975. |
