| Physicist, born in Waldstein, C Austria. He studied at Graz and Vienna universities, then taught at Vienna. He realized during balloon ascents (1912) that high-energy radiation in the Earth's atmosphere originated from outer space. For his work on cosmic radiation he shared the 1936 Nobel Prize for Physics with Carl Anderson. In 1938 he emigrated to the USA to become professor of physics at Fordham University, New York (1938–56). |
