| biography:
| Historian, born in Badajoz, SW Spain. A dramatist, lyrical poet, novelist, critic, translator, journalist, folklorist, and bibliophile, he occasionally used such pseudonyms as Modesto Infante, Barvic. and El Abate Cascarrabias. He studied humanities at the Seminario de San Antón (Badajoz) but the loss of his parents and financial hardship spoiled his chances of a career in the church. He participated in the meetings of the literary club Venecia in Madrid in 1848, but in 1852 he became involved in politics and was returned as the member for Cáceres in 1858. After a road accident, his right leg had to be amputated, which led to a gradual deterioration in his health. Today, the Monasterio de Guadalupe in Cáceres houses an important library of materials relating to him. |
