| Courtesan and scholar, born in Venice, Veneto, NE Italy. Famed for her beauty, as well as her learning, she wrote poems, Terze rime (1575), which added a touch of sensuality to the usual Petrarca-inspired themes. She was put on trial by the Inquisition and, although acquitted, dedicated the rest of her life to charity work. |
