| biography:
| Explorer, born in Radipole, Dorset, S England, UK. He entered the navy in 1857, and in 1872 was appointed to command an African E coast expedition to relieve David Livingstone. Starting from Bagamoyo in 1873, he met Livingstone's followers bearing his remains to the coast. He made a survey of L Tanganyika, then continued to Benguela, the first European to cross Africa from coast to coast. In 1878 he travelled overland to India, to satisfy himself of the feasibility of a Constantinople–Baghdad railway. |
