| Indian politician and diplomat, born in Kozhikode (formerly Calicut), Malabar, SW India. He studied at Chennai (Madras) and London, and became a history teacher and a barrister. In 1929 he was secretary of the India League and the mouthpiece of Indian nationalism in Britain. He was India's first high commissioner in London (1947), and the leader of the Indian delegation to the UN (1952). As defence minister (1957–62), he came into conflict with Pakistan over Kashmir. |
