| Football player, manager, and coach, born in Dagenham, E Greater London, UK. He began his career with Chelsea (1958–66), then joined Tottenham Hotspur (1966–8) and Queens Park Rangers (1968–73). As a manager, he took Crystal Palace from the third division to the top of the first division (1976–80), then managed Queens Park Rangers (1980–4), Barcelona (1984–7) - who won the Spanish Championship in 1984 - and Tottenham Hotspur (1987–93), where he was also chief executive (1991–3) until a much publicized conflict with club chairman Alan Sugar. Venables later became the English national team coach (1994–6), and then coach to the Australian national soccer team. He returned to English football when he took over as coach at Middlesbrough in 2000, followed by an eight-month spell as manager of Leeds United in 2002–3. He was co-author of the 1970s TV detective series, Hazell, and his other writing includes a volume of autobiography (1994) and The Best Game in the World (1996). |
