| Weightlifter, born in Pokrovo-Shishkino, Russia. He set 80 world records (1970–7), more than any other athlete in any sport. Olympic super-heavyweight champion in 1972 and 1976, he won eight world titles and nine European titles. He was made a major in the Russian army, and obtained the title of Master of Sport. |
