| biography:
| Explorer, born in Belmonte, EC Portugal. In 1500 he sailed from Lisbon bound for the East Indies, but was carried to the unknown coast of Brazil, which he claimed on behalf of Portugal. He then made for India, but was forced to land at Mozambique and provided the first description of that country. He made the first commercial treaty between Portugal and India, and returned to Lisbon in 1501. He was given no further missions, and remained for the rest of his life at Santarém. |
