| Folklorist, born in Pittsburg, Kansas, USA. He was a freelance writer in Missouri and Arkansas who had to undertake much pseudonymous hackwork to finance his collecting and study of Ozark folklore. His many volumes of Ozark lore, mostly published in the 1940s–1950s, include Ozark Folksongs (4 vols, 1946–50) and Pissing in the Snow (1976) and are credited with helping to broaden the content and contextual consideration of folklore studies. |
