| A patrician family of politicians and academics. Notable members include: (1) Maurits Cornelis (1768–1858) was a writer and parliamentarian. (2) His son Floris Adriaan (1791–1866) was a liberal/conservative politician, minister of justice (1842–4) and of finance (1844–7). He introduced currency reforms and resigned in 1847 when his proposals for reform of the Constitution did not meet the king's approval. Back in government 1853–6, he resigned again after differing with the king about the School Funding Policy, but was finance minister again in 1860. With Thorbecke he was the leading statesman of his day. (3) Herman Christiaan (1801–74) was a professor and botanist, who published profusely; (4) Jacob Nicolaas (1840–1928) was a writer and politician. He edited De Gids (1883–1916) gradually coming round to the point of view of De Nieuwe Gids. (5) Frederik Jan (1899–1945) was a sculptor. During the German occupation of The Netherlands he was arrested for resistance, and died in Gleiwitz. (6) Gijsbert (1904–77), financed resistance, with his brother Walraven, and was Burgomaster of Amsterdam (1957–67), when he was honourably discharged because the government disagreed with his policy for the police. |
