| The son of the emperor Claudius and Messalina, surnamed in honour of his father's triumph in Britain (43). Claudius's fourth wife, Agrippina the Younger, caused her husband to adopt her son Nero, and treat Britannicus as an imbecile; and Nero, after his accession, had his step-brother poisoned. |
