| Ballet dancer, born in Vitebsk, NE Belarus. Trained in St Petersburg (formerly Leningrad), he made his debut with the Maly Theatre Ballet in 1957, then moved to the Kirov (1964–72). His reputation as a virtuoso performer grew, as he created roles in both classical works and new ballets. He became known internationally when he and his wife, the dancer Galina Ragozina, were refused emigration papers by the Soviet authorities, who eventually allowed them to settle in Israel in 1974. From that time he made guest appearances with companies around the world. His choreography includes Sacré du printemps (1978, The Rite of Spring), Cinderella (1977), and The Idiot (1979). |
