She began her career at Harper & Row publishers (1936–70) as an editor of children's books, headed the children's book department (1940), and became the company's first female vice-president in 1973. She was an innovative editor who established the careers of such writers and illustrators as E B White, Maurice Sendak, and Shel Silverstein. |
