| Jurist, born in Bradfordsville, Kentucky, USA. He graduated from Transylvania University (1853), moved to Arkansas, and practised law. Although he originally opposed secession, he cast his lot with his state during the Civil War. He travelled widely after 1872, and was delegate to the Second Peace Conference at the Hague (1907). He wrote Digest of the Arkansas Reports (1867) and The Constitution of the State of Arkansas (1891). Arkansas placed his statue in the US Capitol. |
