| biography:
| Pope (from 1623), born in Florence, Tuscany, NC Italy. He worked hard to restore papal authority and strengthen the Papal States, and succeeded in adding the duchy of Urbino in 1631. He also had a mediating role in a number of conflicts; he gave more power to the Inquisition, put Galileo Galilei on trial, and condemned Jansenism. A patron of the arts, he built the Barberini palace and Castel Gandolfo. His nepotism enriched his family. |
