| Aviator, born in Lauro, S Italy. He became an aeronautical engineer and built the airships Norge and Italia. He flew across the North Pole in the Norge with Amundsen and Ellsworth in 1926. A general in the Italian air force and professor of aeronautical engineering at Naples, in 1928 he was wrecked in the airship Italia when returning from the North Pole, and was judged to be responsible for the disaster. He resigned his commission, but was later reinstated. |
