| Italian politician, born in Genoa, Liguria, NW Italy. A member of the Socialist Party, he opposed Italy's entry into World War 1. A member of the Ordine Nuovo group, he joined the Communist Party at its inception in 1921. Strongly opposed to Fascism, he was arrested in 1925 and remained either in jail or internal exile until 1943. He was active in the resistance in the Ossola region and in 1946 was a deputy and then president of the Constituent Assembly. He became a senator in 1948. |
