| Ruler of the Timurid empire (1447–9). A grandson of Tamerlane, he made his name particularly as an astronomer. He founded an observatory at Samarkand, compiled astronomical tables, and corrected errors made by Ptolemy of Alexandria, whose figures were still in use. He also wrote poetry and history. After a brief reign, he was overthrown and slain by a rebellious son in 1449. |
