biography: Writer, born in Berlin, Germany. He emigrated to Brazil and the USA, returning home in 1948. His graphic and exciting short stories, reminiscent of Hemingway, include Das Herz des Hais (1960), Der schwarze Hut (1972), and Vom Unzulänglichen der Wirklichkeit. 10 nicht so nette Geschichten (1980). He also wrote novels, including Murmeljagd (1969), Williams' Ex-Casino (1973), and Das Profil (1963, new edn 1984), and the plays Der Bockerer (1946) and Samba (1951). Other works include the comedy Biene, gib mir Honig (1974), known through film and television, and the poetry collection Brasilianischer Romanzero (1950). He was married to the daughter of the emigré Austrian writer Alexander Roda-Roda.
