| Italian politician, born in Palermo, Sicily, S Italy. An opponent of Fascism, he was a member of Giustizia e Libertà and was one of the founders of the Partito d'Azione (Action Party). In 1946 he founded the Democratic Republican Movement, which later merged with the PRI (Italian Republican Party). He was leader of the PRI from 1965 and its president from 1975. He held a number of ministerial posts (transport, foreign trade, budget, treasury) and was deputy prime minister in 1974–6. |
