| biography:
| Robber, born in Hempstead, Essex, SE England, UK. He was a butcher's apprentice, smuggler, housebreaker, highwayman, and horse thief. He entered into partnership with Tom King, whom he accidently killed while firing at a constable (or innkeeper). He was hanged at York for horse stealing. The legendary ride from London to York, attributed to him, was probably actually carried out by ‘Swift John Nevison’ (1639–84), who in 1676 is said to have robbed a sailor at Gadshill at 4 am, and to have established an ‘alibi’ by reaching York at 7.45 pm. |
