| Protestant martyr, born near Haltwhistle, Northumberland, NE England, UK. Educated at Cambridge, he was ordained c.1524, and studied in Paris and Louvain (1527–30). He then held a variety of posts, including chaplain to Cranmer and Henry VIII, and Bishop of Rochester (1547). An ardent reformer, he became Bishop of London (1550), and helped Cranmer prepare the Thirty-nine Articles. On the death of Edward VI he espoused the cause of Lady Jane Grey, was imprisoned, and executed. |
