| US soldier and educator, born in Mississippi, USA. He left the army in the 1930s to serve as a senior administrator at Louisiana State University (LSU). Recalled in 1942, he commanded an infantry division in combat in Sicily and Italy, and led a corps in France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany (1944–5). He later returned as president of LSU (1951–62). |
