| biography:
| Painter and priest, born in Akahama, Japan. He was educated as a Zen monk at the Shokokuji in Kyoto, where the teaching of the artist, Shubun (died c.1445), became the determining factor of his career. He travelled in China (1467–9), and his style shows the influence of Chinese painting. His knowledge of Zen Buddhism and communion with nature allowed him to renew the traditional lyricism of Japanese landscapes, and he came to be the greatest Japanese painter of his time. His major works include ‘Four Seasons Landscape’ (four scrolls, c.1470–90, Tokyo National Museum). |
