| Figure skaters Jayne Torvill (1957– ) and Christopher Dean (1958– ), both from Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK. They were world ice dance champions (1981–4) and Olympic champions (1984). Their highly acclaimed performances included an interpretation of music from Ravel's Bolero, and the musical, Barnum, which was choreographed by British actor Michael Crawford. At the height of their success, they received a record total of 136 perfect ‘sixes’ (the highest award a judge can give in ice-skating). They retired from competitive skating in 1984, and became professional, producing their own ice show. They returned to national and international competition when the competitions were declared open to professionals in 1993 and competed in the 1994 European Championships, where they won the gold medal, and the 1994 Winter Olympics, when they won the bronze medal. |
