| biography:
| Neurophysiologist, born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He worked at Montreal Neurological Institute (1952–4), then went to the USA to join Johns Hopkins (1954–5). He moved to the Walter Reed Army Institute for Research (1955–8), then to the Wilmer Institute of Johns Hopkins (1958–9), where he met vision specialist Torsten Wiesel. Hubel moved to Harvard (1959) to continue collaborating with Wiesel on studies relating retinal function to visual perception as interpreted by the brain. For their discoveries, Hubel and Wiesel shared the 1981 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. |
