biography: Poet, born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. After studying in Leeds, and teaching in Nigeria and Prague, he became known with The Loiners (1970) and the translation Palladas Poems (1975). His combination of classical technique and colloquial language has produced powerful effects in the open sequences Ten Poems from the School of Eloquence (1976) and Continuous (1981), also evident in his vigorous adaptations from French, Greek, and mediaeval drama. Poems on social conflict (‘V’. 1985, televised 1987) and the Gulf War (‘A Cold Coming’, 1991) underline his commitment to public issues, confirmed in The Gaze of the Gorgon (1992, Whitbread). Later works include Poetry or Bust (1993) and The Prince's Play (1996), and he was a contributor to The Poetry Quartets (1999).
