| Baptist minister and Canadian politician. As premier of Saskatchewan (1944–61), he led the first Socialist government elected in Canada, and was later leader of the federal New Democratic Party for 10 years. He helped establish Democratic Socialism in the mainstream of Canadian politics, and with the introduction of medicare in Saskatchewan is recognized as the Canadian ‘father of socialized medicine’. |
